Grass is Singing

by Doris Lessing

Excellent characterisation, albeit set in Africa years ago.
Steadily and slowly builds up to a climax.

I read this book and saw the movie in 1985 when I was studying English Literature. A memorable story, beautifully written.

I agree with Jennie. It must be 20 years or more since I read this book, but I can still remember the feeling of tension which it evoked in me as the story developed and just hearing the book title reminds me of the landscapes (both vistas and sounds) described in the book. Highly recommended.

This is a book that has stuck with me for years. She is a brilliant writer and the themes are topical with the changes going on in various regions of Africa.
