by William Boyd

Not normally something I would pick up, I've been attracted to it by the shortlisting for several awards, as well as the fact that it's set in wartime and involves family relationships and deception.

Very involving, despite being set in two timescales mother and daughter's lives told in tandem and I can't wait to pick it up again. Hope it stays enjoyable and gripping to the end!

Well constructed & clever, although I found the alternating time scales not quite to my taste. I found the mother's time much more interesting, but recognize it was a neat method of contrast & an efficient means of narration, & a perfect way to present the final glimpse of the mother as seen by her daughter.

Not my normal type of read as I normally avoid books set in the war, however as it was an award winner and a bookclub read I felt I should give it a go and I really enjoyed this book. I like the way it was written - alternate chapters with the mother and daughter it really made you want to read on. I will now try more books by William Boyd
