Precious Bane

by Mary Webb

Set in Rural Shropshire in the early 19th Century, the book centres on Prudence Sarn, a girl born with a hare lip.
It tells of part of her life and that of her family on an isolated farm.
The curious title is taken from Milton.
The descriptions of the natural world are beautiful.
ok it is 'romantic' but a real gem with some unforgettable scenes.

Loved this book - felt inspired to go and explore the SHropshire hills that she describes with such feeling.
Lovely book. I think Mary Webb probably suffers from having been wildly popular at one time. Having said that, you can see it might be the kind of book satirised in 'Cold Comfort Farm'!
This book is an old favourite of mine. I love the way Mary Webb writes and sets a scene. I can also recommend "Gone to Earth"
