The Corner

by David Simon

This book follows a year in the life of a number of residents of Baltimore, Maryland and the way in which drugs and drug related violence impact on their lives.

The McCullough family form the heart of this book with ex husband and wife Gary and Fran both battling with addiction whilst their son DeAndre takes his first steps into dealing.

At times truly heartbreaking as characters fall to addiction, overdose and death, whilst young people's lives end before they've had a chance to really start.

In amongst the doom and gloom there are also positives as one of DeAndre's parents kicks the habit and starts a 'clean' life, whilst his girlfriend manages to escape the pull of The Corner and stay in school.

I'd also recommend "Homicide: A year on the killing streets" by the same author
